Why a Logo is so important
Every company needs a Logo, some image compilation that identifies the brand, the business. It doesn’t even have to be something huge and complex, most big successful companies have a quite simple logo.
And why are logos so important? Well let’s just try some experiments.
Think a little bit about each of these companies/brands: McDonalds, Apple, Facebook. What were the first things popping to your head? Images of course, on McDonalds you probably pictured burgers, the restaurant, the ‘M’ of McDonalds; when you thought about Apple, you for sure thought about iPhones or iPads, and the apple with a bite.
You’re getting the picture, right? The logos stick into your head, they associate an entire concept and brand into just a graphic image.
We can also do the experience on the reversed order. For example, try to name these brands:
Easy right? Impressive how these images get into your head, sometimes without you even realizing it. Well, the last one is too easy. No? Maybe that’s because you should SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER!
How to design a logo
Now, to design a logo you need the proper tools. The absolute best program for it is Adobe Illustrator, an incredible professional tool every great designer uses, enabling them to do images with any sizes without losing any quality.
Of course, there are lots of other programs that are free and can manage to accomplish lots of things that the Illustrator does. However, I believe getting the Adobe Illustrator program is the right decision for everyone who wants to design as a real professional, worth every penny.
One of the great things about designing and dealing with these sort of programs (especially Illustrator) is that there are millions of tutorials on the internet, some even made from the pros working at Adobe. ANYONE can learn through those tutorials. Some are videos, although I prefer the ones written.
I myself learned how to use Illustrator with some of these tutorials, and with some additional motivation that I found to be just amazing: earning money while learning. Which brings me to the next point.
How to start making money with logo designing
A professional logo designer can earn around 600$ for a logo, which is quite a lot for such a small thing, and a little bit unsettling for me as well. When I learned about this fact, that’s when I started learning about Illustrator. But, as you may have already experienced, it takes perseverance to learn a skill, especially a professional one.
For this reason, I tried something crazy: to put myself on the market and get paid for designing some logos, without even knowing how to design in the beginning. Of course, I would never get 600$ for my first logos. So how to start then?
Fishing for the job
I started sending emails to whatever companies I would find with not so good logos, and I would offer my designing services for less than 20% of the market price, like 70$ to 80$. I would send something like this:
My name is Gonçalo, aerospace engineering student in Lisbon, Portugal, at Instituto Superior Técnico.
I am also a professional logo designer and I found your website on Google. My job consists on making more professional logo designs for companies around the world to have a better image for costumers to be unconsciously attracted to your business, and I’m here to offer my services, in case you desire to make some Logos for your company!
The usual price for such a service is around 400-500$, but as I am currently looking for ways to quickly expand my portfolio, I am offering my design services for almost 10% of the market price, 70-80$! My services include an infinite number of revisions, in order for you to be completely happy with the new Logo!
Thank you for your time! I hope to hear from you soon!
I would normally refer the fact that I’m an aerospace engineering student, especially when I
sent this email to aerospace related companies needing new and better logos. This can take some time, try to put some personality on your email, and if you have something to prove some of your skills you should as well mention them.
For me, it took just a few days until I got two orders for logos, which made me work hard to learn this new skill, and got me some extra cash, which is always nice. As easy as that! The time it takes depends on your efforts of course.
Freelance websites, the other option
Another way to earn money designing logos is to register on freelance websites, such as Freelance.com, although through this method you earn less money per logo and it can be even more difficult to get orders. However, it’s still a nice way to expand your portfolio quickly. Or if you want some job done, not necessarily related to designing, in a short-period and with a low budget, you should go ahead and post a project there, and then people will just find you and do their best for you!
Once you’ve created lots of logos through these methods, you can build a portfolio where you’ll store all of your successful logos. This way, you’ll have material to show your possible clients that you have experience. You could maybe create a website where anyone can see online your great work and ask for your services.
By the time you have a nice portfolio, you can move on to asking for more money, maybe 250$ for your services to still be cheaper than the market prices, or you can risk and try to create some sort of luxury brand, asking for more than the market price and corresponding with high quality material.
Choose one of these paths, or maybe try both and see which works best for you! Either way, you got yourself a brand new professional skill AND you made some cash. Congrats!
